Thus enabling manufacturers to make more desktop ready products such as diagnostic units for medical offices and life science research laboratories.
Sometimes the base size (Width and Length) may be constrained to fit within a small space.
In many applications the need for low profile is more dominate than anything else. Width and Length may not be so important.
Other applications require very compact mechanisms where table top or platen needs to travel beyond the motor face such as the motorized XY stage shown.
